Fall is often when things start to speed up - work deadlines, back to school chaos, the slow creep of holiday stress. It's also the time of year many of us are craving the opposite: more slowness, stillness, calm...and cozy vibes.
One of the most powerful rituals my husband and I have added into our lives this year is now something we swear by: No-Screen Sundays.
Every Sunday, we turn off our phones, avoid laptops, and leave the TV off. That's it. It's simple, but surprisingly transformative.
Without screens, the day feels longer. Our conversations go deeper. We read more, walk more, breathe more. And by Sunday night, we both feel more connected - not just to each other, but to ourselves.
If you're looking for more calm this fall, here are a few rituals you might try:
No-Screen Sundays
You could even do a half day if a whole day feels like too much (seriously, though, you can do it! And it's worth it). Even 3-4 hours of unplugged time can help your nervous system downshift. Try putting your phone in a drawer after dinner one night a week as a soft start, just to see how it feels.
Embrace Cozy
Did you know that Denmark has consistently been ranked the happiest country in the world since 2012? This ranking has many people asking: what's the secret? Danes have long practiced the concept of hygge: a practice that encourages simple pleasures, and coziness as a cornerstone of Danish culture. The key to hygge is creating a cozy environment, eating yummy food, drinking nourishing beverages and being with people you love.
Ideas for implementing hygge:
Create a Cozy Corner: Choose a spot in your home that you can make cozier: Add blankets, pillows, candles, soft lighting and books. Want to take it even further?Channel your inner child: make a cozy fort! Pin up some sheets and put some cozy underneath for the ultimate hygge experience.
Invite your Friends: Hygge works best when shared, so invite some of your favorite people to join your cozy hang sesh. Play board games, talk, enjoy food together and keep it as cozy as possible!
Make your Favorite Foods: Bake your favorite dishes or goods or try a new recipe that looks yummy and makes you feel cozy. Share it with family and friends over a warm beverage!
