Cold Plunge Confidence: 5 Tips for Beginners

If you’ve heard about cold plunging and thought, “Why on earth would I ever do that?” then you’re in the right place!

Trust us, we get it. The idea of submerging yourself in icy water can sound pretty daunting. But here at Capitol Floats, we’re all about pushing boundaries and discovering the incredible benefits that come with cold plunging.

Since opening our private Fire & Ice rooms in Sacramento and Auburn, we've welcomed many new guests at Cap Floats, who are embracing the experience and learning to acclimate to the challenge.

Here are five tips to help you acclimate and make your first cold plunge experience less scary and more rewarding.

1. Start small

Start with a quick 30-second dip. The initial cold might feel like a shock, but there’s no need to overdo it. Start small and gradually increase your time in the cold water as your body adapts. As you get more comfortable, you can extend your plunge time to one minute, then two, then three.

2. Focus on your breathing

Your breath is your best friend when it comes to managing the cold. Practice deep, controlled breathing before and during your plunge. Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. This not only helps you stay calm but also aids in regulating your body’s response to the cold.

3. Prepare mentally before you get in the water

Cold plunging is a great exercise in trusting yourself to get through difficult experiences. Preparing mentally for the cold plunge can make a huge difference. Visualize yourself successfully completing the plunge and enjoying the invigorating feeling afterward. Remember, your body is capable of amazing things when your mind is in the right place.

4. Stay consistent

Consistency is key to adapting to the cold. The more regularly you practice cold plunging, the more your body will adapt and the easier it will become. Aim for at least a few plunges each week to build your tolerance and maximize the benefits. Plus, regular practice can make the experience something you actually look forward to! Memberships are the best way to get a great deal on regular visits to our Fire & Ice rooms.

5. Pay attention to your body's signals

There's no rush. Embrace the journey at your own pace. If you feel dizzy or light-headed, exit the plunge and take a few minutes to rest. Also, be sure to hydrate well before and after your session.
